After Zghorta, party leaders will go head-to-head in the municipal election battle in the northern town of Batroun.
Two groups are competing in Batroun – one headed by Marcelino al-Herk and supported by Michel Aoun’s Free Patriotic Movement and the rival coalition is headed by former MP Sayed Aql.
Energy Minister Jebran Bassil confirmed that Batroun was headed toward a battle.
They sneaked at night to Batroun and shied away from showing up in the day,” Bassil said in remarks published Thursday by the daily An-Nahar.
They want it a political battle … Let it be one because benevolence to help Batroun never came from them anyway,” Bassil warned.
Aql hit back at Bassil, saying his statement is seen as an insult to Batrounis and is aimed at distorting public opinion.
